Fruit of the Month — Kiwis

How to select:
For the sweetest, fullest flavor, choose plump, fragrant diwi fruit that yield to gentle pressure, like ripe peaches. Unripe fruit has a hard core and a tart, as-tringent taste. If only firm kiwis are available, ripen them for a few days before eating them.

To ripen firm kiwis, leave them at room temperature, but away from heat or direct sunlight, for a few days to a week.

Did you know ...

Kiwi is BURSTING with Vitamin C. One kiwi has 120% of the recommended daily allowance for this disease-protective vitamin.

How to Select and Store Carrots

Carrot roots should be firm, smooth, relatively straight and bright in color. The deeper the orange-color, the more beta-carotene is present in the carrot. Avoid carrots that are excessively cracked or forked as well as those that are limp or rubbery. In addition, if the carrots do not have their tops attached, look at the stem end and ensure that it is not darkly colored as this is also a sign of age. If the green tops are attached, they should be brightly colored, feathery and not wilted. Since the sugars are concentrated in the carrots' core, generally those with larger diameters will have a larger core and therefore be sweeter.

Did you know ...

in the early 1800s, the carrot became the first vegetable to be canned.

Message from the Coordinator

Hello Everyone!

We have had two successful food boxes in Sept. Thank you to Tony Keewatin, KIN Enterprises, Wesmor Grade 10 students, and Jen Gibson for coming out to volunteer!!!

With the amount of food boxes increasing, it is getting more difficult to find enough boxes! Members who bring in their own box or bag will have their name put into a draw box for a free food box. Sept winners were N Bailey, and C Howland.

CALLING ALL RECIPES!!!

Do you have a favorite dish you would like to share with others?

Recipes can be emailed to smartfamiliesfoodcoop@yahoo.ca, or drop them by the River Bank Development Office inside the Bernice Sayese Centre. They can also be mailed to the Smart Families Food Co-Op at 1350 15th Ave. West, Prince Albert, Sk. S6V 5P2.

Be sure to include your name so that we can credit you for your recipe.

MESSAGE FROM THE COORDINATOR

Hi there! My name is Janine Robin, and I am now your Program Coordinator for the Smart Families Food Co-Op. My first day was on June 1st, and nothing could have prepared me for what my responsibilities were. I am currently learning the new role, and please have patience with me as I am in the learning process. I am looking forward to learn more about the SFFC Program, and meeting new people in the process. I have met some of you when you have come to pay for your food boxes, or rent, and I was greeted with big smiles.

JUST A REMINDER

The Smart Families Food Co-Op wants to remind all member and future members that we will be accepting payments for the Good Food Box at our new location. Anyone wanting to pay for a food box can do so at the Addictions Services office located at: 101 15th Street East. The Food Co-Op is looking forward to working with all the staff at Addictions Services as we continue to expand our program.

Smart Families Food Co-op has gotten off to a great start after a nice summer break

We are thrilled about the interest in the SFFC program.  Membership numbers are growing. For the most part it has been word of mouth that continues to help us grow — so a big thank you to our members for sharing program benefits with families and friends.

October and pumpkins go together

We have Thanksgiving and Halloween.  Pumpkin is used for both these events in very different ways.  Did you know that pumpkin – which is kind of like a squash or gourd – is actually a fruit that is grown around the world?  For those of us that like the neat botanical names that we learned in Science classes here is a refresher.  Pumpkin belongs to the Kingdom: Plantae in the Family: Curcurbitaceae.  Within this family, pumpkin belongs to the Genus: Curcurbita.  In this genus there are many species.

REMEMBER…

to share your newsletter with a friend or neighbour.  If they show any interest in the Food Co-op, please invite them to come to the Bernice Sayese Community Centre 1350 – 15th Avenue West on Pick-Up Day, between 12:00 and 4:00 p.m., to see a “Good Food Box”, and to talk to other satisfied members, our Coordinator, or a Board Member.

Welcome Back...

to the Smart Families Food Co-op — Fall is here, and we welcome back all “smart families” to the local good food box program!  We hope you’ll enjoy all of the great fruit and veggies in this month’s box!

Smart Families Guidelines - Review

As we prepare for another food box season, we wanted to take the opportunity to go over some of the Smart Families Food Co-op membership guidelines. As always, we encourage everyone who hasn't yet purchased a $10 membership to do so, and start earning stamps toward a free food box.

AppleMemberships are open to everyone, there is no criteria to join the Food Co-op. As stated earlier, memberships cost $10 and include a coupon for $5 off the price of your first food box. Members also receive a stamp card. For every nine food boxes purchases of either the small or large size, members will receive one free.

Buying a membership is a cheap and easy way to save even more money on your already affordable food boxes. However, there are a few rules to remember.

  • First, memberships must be presented at the time of purchase in order to collect stamps toward a free food box. As the number of food box orders increases, we find ourselves no longer able to continually review customers’ purchases to keep their stamp cards up to date. Those who do not present their stamp cards at the time of purchase will not be able to receive a stamp for that food box.
  • Members can only receive three stamps at any one time. That means they can receive up to three stamps each for both the large and small food boxes every month, regardless of how many they buy. That means members would only receive three stamps on their card, even if they actually bought four, five, six or more boxes at any one time.
  • Of course, members are always encouraged to buy as many food boxes as they like.
  • Those who lose their stamp cards will be able to receive a new card, but will not be able to recoup the stamps they previously had.

We hope these guidelines are easy to follow. For quick reference, they are also printed on the back of your membership cards.

Anyone who has questions is welcome to contact the program coordinator at 763-0242.
